Conditioning horse feed

Conditioning horse feed | Perfect partners for condition and top line...

07 February 2025

Sometimes, our horses need a bit of a nutritional boost. Maybe they require extra during the winter, or when building up to a demanding competition season. Time for TopGain and Perform & Shine.

TopGain is a is high calorie, high oil top-up feed for horses. It is naturally low sugar, so is non-heating and should not cause any unwanted ‘fizz’.

Two perfectly complementary ingredients do the job – high protein lucerne leaf and cooked, full fat linseed.

  • Lucerne leaf is naturally high in vitamins and minerals, including calcium, but lower in fibre, so more of the feed is body-building nutrition.
  • Linseed is very high in oil and importantly, it’s high in essential omega 3, which is vital for cell renewal and repair. Linseed is also anti-inflammatory, high calorie and an excellent source of phosphorous - perfectly balancing the lucerne leaf’s calcium.

As TopGain is naturally concentrated it has a low feeding rate. Feed 100g per day of 100kg of ideal bodyweight - so just 500g per day for an average 500kg horse. This makes TopGain a very useful feed for horses with limited appetites.

We suggest feeding TopGain alongside a forage chop, especially if offering as a Target Feed immediately before work. Simply add the measure of TopGain to the chop and dampen down well before feeding. The chop will help to form a fibre mat to line and protect the stomach from acid splash.

Perform & Shine is a perfect partner to TopGain. It is our highest energy chop and is made from Cocksfoot and Timothy grass with a light coating of cold pressed linseed oil. The two grasses offer forage variety, fibre and quality protein. The linseed oil contains valuable omega 3.

We suggest introducing any new feeds to the diet gradually. If you’d like to discuss introducing TopGain and Perform & Shine to your horse’s diet, please contact the Feed Line on 01728 604 008.
